Title : Nutritional evaluation and utilization of forage crops resistant ot water stress as cattle feed
The scarcity of forage during the dry season is a major constraint of the ruminant production in the Northeast Thailand. And the constant supply of high quality feed is one of most important keys to increase the productivity in the area.
Local by products such as riec straw and sugarcane stalks have been used as roughages for cattle feeding during the dry season in the Northeast. In addition, wild relatives of sugarcane, such as Saccharum spontaneum and Erianthus spp, and inter-specific crosses between sugarcane varieties have been recontly attracted as forage crops, due to the high biomass production with a lower sugar content and attenuated leafy chracter. There fore theevaluation of feed value of availble local feed resources and forage crops resistant to water stress, and its preparation as a feed areneeded for establishment of effective and efficient utilization of htese crops in Thailand.
The study aims to evaluate nutrient values of wild relatives of sugarcane, such as Saccharum spontaneum and Erianthus spp, and inter specific crosses between sugarcane varieties as forage crops at farming and institutional levels and toestablish utilization technologies as cattle feed to apply the results obtained in the former project.
