Title : Development of high biomass forage crops tolerant to water stress by interspecific and intergeneric crossing
The feed resources in the dry season havebeen a major limiting factor for ruminant production in the Northeast Thailand . High yielding forage crops with high nutritive quality are required in order to solve the problem.
Sugarcane is comparatively tolerant to drought and the tops of sugarcane stalks have been aiready widely used in the region.
The sugarcane breeding has been carried out mainly by intra-specific hybridization in order to obtain properties such as high sugar yield, juice quality and tolerance to disease and pest Thereforc, sugarcane cultivars that have been developed are not appropriate for direct use as forage in area. However, Erianthus spp and Saccharum spontaneun: have good adaptability to wide range of conditions from wet to dry environment. In recent years, Erianthus spp. and s. spontaneum have been used in sugarcane breeding program by many sugarcaneproducing countries. It has been also reported that some interspecific and intergcneric hybrids have shown good ratooning ability markedly vigorous growth and yield It is highly expected that the new forage crops which posses high adaptability in the Northeast Thailand are bred by such crossing followed by a series of selection processes with new criteria.
|The aim of this study is as follows.|
|1.||To screen breeding materials with high biomass and adaptability to the environmental conditions in the Northeast Thailand.|
|2.||To breed the new types of forage crops which possess high biomass, good growth and adaptability to the environment conditions of the Northeast Thailand by means of interspecific and intergeneric hybridzation among sugarcane and their wildelatives.
|1.||Evaluation and selection of the wild relatives of sugarcane for good adaptability to the constraints in the Northeast Thailand such as drought conditions, infertile sandy soil, ratooning ability and etc under pot and field.|
|2.||Development of F1 plants by crossing commercial sugarcane cultivars with the promising wild ralative sugarcane and identifying its hybridity.|
|3.||Selection of superior hybrids that are well adapted to the environment conditions in pot and field Good hybrids with high biomass, good ratooning abillity, fast growth in early growth stage and tolerance to drought will be selectedin pot and field. In on-station and on fram trials, the yield, agronomic characteristics and resistance to important sugarcae diseases will be evaluated.|
